Last spring a homeowner in Hopedale called us after getting three estimates from painters in the area. Two of them never mentioned prep. They showed up, looked around, quoted a number, and left. The third mentioned caulking but only around the front door. She hired us because we were the only ones who walked the whole house before we said anything about price. That's not unusual. It's actually how most people find us — they talk to a few contractors, something feels off, and then they call.

New England exteriors take a beating. The combination of humidity in the summer and freeze-thaw cycles from November through March is hard on paint film in a way that most people don't fully appreciate until they're looking at peeling siding three years into a paint job that should have lasted ten.
The problem is almost never the paint. It's the prep. We power wash every exterior before we touch it, let it dry completely, scrape anything loose, caulk every gap around windows, doors, trim, and siding seams, and prime bare wood before the finish coat goes on. On wood siding specifically, we're checking for soft spots, moisture damage, and areas where the previous paint has failed from the substrate up — those need to be addressed before painting, not painted over.

Most painters patch holes. We actually do drywall. Drywall repair, drywall installation, exterior sheetrock repair, and water damage repair throughout Central Massachusetts. Water damage in particular needs to be done in the right order — address the source, treat for mold if there's any indication, replace damaged sections, and prime with a stain-blocking product before finish painting. Painting over water damage without doing it properly just means the stain comes back through.

The problem is almost always the prep — contractors who acid etch instead of diamond grind, or who skip moisture testing and apply epoxy to concrete that's pulling moisture from below.
Diamond grinding is the only way to create the mechanical profile that epoxy needs to bond permanently. We use floor grinders with diamond-segment heads to open the concrete surface. After grinding, we repair cracks, apply the base coat, broadcast decorative flake or solid color, and seal with a polyaspartic topcoat. Wallpaper removal is one of those jobs that sounds straightforward and almost never is.
